Morning Focus Friday 16th May

On Fridays Morning Focus; John began by speaking to Education Minister Ruairi Quinn as he visits Clare Today.  John spoke to the Minister about his visit to the Banner county, pupil teacher ratio in smaller rural schools, Labour chances in the local elections and concerns within Labour over medical card issues.

Sr. Mary Neylon, Inagh Missionary Nun home from Peru joined John is studio to tell John and listeners about her work.  Clare County Council, supported by Ennis Tidy Towns volunteers, will host a charity sale in Ennis this Friday (16 May 2014) to raise funds for a youth project in Lima, Peru. The Big Upcycle Pop-Up Sale at Áras Contae an Chláir coincides with the visit home from the South American country of Inagh native and Columban sister Mary Neylon who this year celebrates her Golden Jubilee in her profession. Sr. Mary Neylon, affectionately known as Mary Ann, has worked for the last 25 years with the people in Lima.

Pauline Dunleavy of Kilrush RNLI was next to speak to John.  Pauline received her Long Service medal on Tuesday night for 20 years service.  Kilrush R.N.L.I. lifeboat station was established to provide additional cover on the west coast of Ireland, especially the Shannon Estuary, where there had been a significant increase in water sports and commercial activities.

Environment Minister Phil Hogan spoke to John ahead of his visit to Clare today.  The Minister will be in Carrigaholt and Dromoland later today.  He spoke to John about water charges and property tax and storm damage. 

The 80th anniversary of the Crotty Cup Cycle Race, organised by the West Clare Cycling Club and sanctioned by Cycling Ireland, takes place this Saturday 17th May at 3pm. Sign-on for competitors is from 1 pm at the Kilmihil Community Centre.  The course takes riders from westward from Kilmihil to Shaughnessy Cross, along the Ennis Road to Johnsons Cross and turning back to Kilmihil, a circuit of 13.5 km. A1, A2 and A3 grade cyclists will do 5 laps of the circuit, whilst A4 cyclists will do 3 laps.  PRO of West Clare Cycling Club Paul Edson gave John the details.
