Scotland has rejected independence, despite the Yes campaign winning a majority in the largest city. While Glasgow voted in favour of independence, the margin of victory was not large enough to give Alex Salmond and his campaign the momentum they needed. There were also wins for Yes in three of Scotland's 32 local authority areas – Dundee, West Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire.
While there was a comfortable majority in Dundee, the turnout in the city was 78.8% – lower than many other parts of Scotland, indicating that the Yes campaign has not managed to get voters out in sufficient numbers.The turnout in Glasgow was even lower at 75%, with 194,779 Yes votes (53.49%) and 169,347 No votes (46.51%). Kilrush Irish dancing teacher John Fennell is spearheading a campaign to demand for the reduction of VAT for Irish dancing to the level of Ballet. VAT on Irish dancing is 23% whilst the rate for ballet is between 0% and 9%.John says the department of finance view ballet as essential and Irish dancing as a luxury and wants to challenge this, John's point that lap dancing has a lower vat rate than Irish dancing certainly struck a cord with listeners !
Our Friday panel this week was Noiren Flynn retired teacher who hails from Scotland, Disability Campaigner Dermot Hayes and Farmer and member of ICMSA Martin McMahon. The guys discussed a range of issues including The Scottish Referendum, the return of the Dail, this weeks farm protests, the shelved plans for the all male diaconate for the diocese of Killaloe and the success of the Clare U21's.
