Morning Focus Friday 31st January

On Fridays Morning Focus John was joined by Mattie Shannon from the Doolin Coast Guard and Dr. Kieran Hickey, Climatologist in the Geography Department at NUI Galway. Clare residents are preparing themselves for another weekend of bad weather.  Met Eireann have issued a weather warning for the county and high tides are expected to reach record level.

 Maeve Lewis from One in Four spoke to John about the Louise O’Keeffe case which saw The European Court of Human Rights rule against the state.  Ms O’Keeffe was abuse by her school principle in the 70’s.  The state had said they weren’t liable however Louise was awarded 30 thousand euro in the European Court.  The Taoiseach and The Tanaiste have both apologised to Ms. O’Keeffe.  Maeve and John discussed what this case will do for other victims. 

 A ban on make-up for under 10’s in Irish dancing circles has been put in place.  Derarbhla Lennon PRO of An Coimisiun Le Rinci Gaelacha and Ennis based dance teacher Michael Donnellan joined John to debate what this will mean for the Irish dancing sector.

 Renowned artist Mick O’Dea spoke to John about his recent biking accident on O’Connell Street in Dublin.  Mick was badly injured in the accident resulting in the loss of a spleen and a four day stay in intensive care. 

 Colaiste Eoghan Ui Chomhraidhe is planning to open as normal this summer despite the storm damage.  However Sean De Paor joined John to chat about his concerns to access roads and the sea wall by the college.

 The Bridge Congress kicks off in Ennis this weekend.  The PRO of the Congress Joan Duggan and President Ann Knox came into studio to discuss the event with John.
