Morning Focus Monday 28th July

On Mondays Morning Focus John began by chatting to Fr Tom Ryan – Shannon Parish Priest.  Fr Tom says there is a demand for a crematorium in Clare however Clare County Councillors gave it the thumbs down on Friday the 18th July.  John spoke to Fr. Ryan about his experiences with families and how is there is need for a choice in this county.  John also gave the results of an online poll by Clare FM which shows that of the people that took part the majority would like to see a crematorium in this county. 

The 2014 Galway summer festival gets underway today. The seven day racing bonanza at Ballybrit will play host to over 150,000 racing fans, and offers punters unrivalled fun, fashion and frolics throughout the week.  The first race is off at 5.10pm today.  John spoke to John Moloney – Manger of Galway Race Course about what punters can look forward to this week.

Nancy Creech is a listener from Quilty that got in touch with the show.  She is Co-Secretary Quilty Action Group,  She email [email protected] and said 'I have been watching and listening with interest to the coastal erosion media coverage driven by our neighbours in Clohanincy, and I believe that Quilty Village is, once again, being overlooked.'  John spoke to Nancy about what she would like to see happening in the small communities that are still suffering following storms at the beginning of this year. 

Ann O'Sullivan and Bernie Bennis are sisters from Clare.  They called into studio and spoke to John about how they lost a staggering 11 stone between them. It took the Super Sisters just eight months to get their health – and waistlines – back on track.  They gave Morning Focus listeners tips on how to follow suit. 

Kilrush & District Historical Society will mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I with a commemorative concert in the Teach Ceoil in Kilrush tomorrow.  The event will feature songs and poetry from the First World War (1914-1918).  The songs will be sung by mezzo soprano Edel O'Brien, accompanied by Michael Hennessy.  The Society would particularly like to invite the descendants of those Kilrush and west Clare men who fought in the War to take part in this event.  John was joined in studio by Paddy Waldron – PRO Kilrush & District Historical Society – to hear more about the event and Edel O'Brien Kilrush Mezzo Soprano was also in studio to give listeners a taste of the music that will be showcased tomorrow night.

Finally, John Murphy, wildlife expert and Chairperson of the Clare branch of Birdwatch Ireland joined John in studio to answer listeners' bird and wildlife queries.
