MORNING FOCUS MONDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER

Clare County Council has voted to reduce the property tax charge here by the maximum amount of 15%.A special meeting on the issue was held at Áras Chontae an Chláir this morning which saw members of the technical group and Fianna Fáil join forces with the exception of Cllrs Christy Curtin and Ian Lynch. The 17 Councillors, who formed a pact on the issue, voted for a full reduction of 15 per cent on the property tax. While Fine Gael voted against the  reduction saying it would mean on average a reduction of 26 to 66 cent a week in people's bills in 2015.The vote was carried and the reduction in the charge will come into force in 2015.Cllrs Tom McNamara (FF), Bill Slatery (FG) and PJ Ryan (Ind) spoke to Marian about the controversial decision

The North Clare Historical Society will commence its new lecture series on Monday 29th September with a talk by Eddie Lenihan entitled From Corofin to Lahinch: Footing it on the West Clare Railway.   Lenihan, author, storyteller, lecturer and broadcaster is a native of Brosna, County Kerry and currently resides in Crusheen, County Clare. He is a collector of folk tales, recording stories told by older people as passed to them in oral tradition, and then distributing them to a wider audience via print, audio and filmed recordings. He is currently working on a novel on The Civil War in County Kerry based on oral material he collected there in the 1970s. Local historian and renowned story Teller Eddie Lenihan was in studio to chat about the new lecture series.

In support of their new moving on Together Project, Mid-West Simon Community organised a fundraising Sleep Out Challenge to raise awareness and funds to support the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary. Events in Kilrush over the weekend  were lead by many high profile participants including local TDs and Councillors who are giving up their beds for the night. Jackie Bonfield General Manager of the  Mid-West Simon Community joined us again to tell us how the weekend went

On Saturday 4 October, over 800 teachers and members of the public will come together to celebrate innovation in teaching and World Teachers’ Day 2014. Hosted by the Teaching Council, FÉILTE takes place in Dublin’s RDS. Maire Nunan from Mol on Oige Steiner National School will showcase her project on using movement programme with primary school children experiences difficulties with literacy .Maire spoke to us about her research.
