Morning Focus Monday December 10

On Monday’s Morning Focus John Cooke spoke with Eoin Gavin in Bunratty, President of the Irish Road Hauliers – he welcomed the rebate on diesel from July 1st next that was announced in Budget 2013

From January Car Registration Plates to be 13 1 for first six months and 13 2 for second six months – those in the industry had previously said that a ’13’ registration number would hit car sales – John Hill of Sheils, Ennis welcomed the move.

The government is insisting there’ll be no reversal of budget cuts  despite the concerns of some backbench TDs over child Benefit cuts and respite care grant reductions – as well as large protests by family carers in Clare and Dublin on Friday
As carers gathered outside Dail Eireann on Friday a group of up to 50 people marched through the streets of Ennis demanding a rethink on plans to cut 325 euro from their annual respite care payment
The Ennis protestors visited the offices of Clare’s four TDs to send out a clear message to them ahead of a vote on the budget’s most controversial measures this week
John went to meet them and spoke with Tom Coffey, Niamh Daly, Mary Browne and her Husband
Susan from Ennis, Eileen from Ennis, Karen Murtagh and Janet Sheehy.

Senator Tony Mulcahy of Fine Gael said it’s not the grant that’s the problem – it is the cost of the respite itself

Marian Harkin MEP said carers in Clare saved the State at least €100 million per year through caring for dependents and the Government’s action in reducing the carers respite grant by €325 was a despicable response to their dedicated work.

Garda Niall Cosgrove of Ennis Garda Station appealed for the public’s assistance with information on crimes committed in the county over the past week
