The number of elderly people suffering abuse has seen a rise of 7 per cent in the last year
The Health Service Executive has published a review of the Elder Abuse Services for 2012 which shows that psychological abuse remains the number one form of mistreatment towards older people at 36 per cent, while financial abuse follows at 25 per cent

On Monday’s Morning Focus – presented by Gavin Grace – Paschal Moynihan, Specialist in Older Person Services with the Health Service Executive explained that the report shows that in nearly 50 per cent of the cases a son or daughter is the alleged perpetrator

Eamon Timmons of Age Action Ireland welcomed the rise in the number of cases of alleged elder abuse referred to the HSE’s specialist elder abuse service last year, noting it is evidence that progress continues to be made to address a largely hidden problem in Irish society

The Ennistymon Community Hospital committee are delighted to be signing documents with a contractor this morning for the commencement of phase 1 of a 5 year plan to renovate and extend the hospital
They have been fundraising for three years and have received some funding from the HSE
Tomsie O’Sullivan explained that Ennistymon community Hospital can currently accommodate 28 patients- but they are hoping to have room for more after this project is complete.

Last Thursday Ennis lady Anne O’Driscoll made an empassioned appeal on this programme after her African Grey parrot Paddy went missing
Happily Anne was in touch this morning to say that Paddy was found and returned to her yesterday- she thanked everyone who had helped her in the search!

Clare are into their first All Ireland Senior Hurling Semi Final since 2006 after seeing off the Tribesmen at Semple Stadium.
The Banner ran out six-point winners over Galway  in their Quarter Final at Thurles yesterday evening.
Conor McGrath blasted in the Clare goal in the first half Johnny Glynn and Niall Healy got goals back for the Tribesmen after the break but it wasn’t enough and final score 1-23 to 2-14
Afterwards Clare Manager Davy Fitzgerald paid tribute to his charges but admits they need to tighten up their game now

Clare now go on to take on neighbours Limerick in the All Ireland Semi Final on August 18th
Gavin spoke with Hurling legend Jamsie O’Connor to get his take on the result.

Fr Gus Frawley is a Kilshanny native and has been an African Missionary for the past fifty years
Fr Frawley was born in Kilshanny in 1937 and was ordained in 1963 – and then went on the missions – he celebrates his jubilee this year
Fr Gus joined Gavin in studio to speak about his adventures in Africa
First he went to Nigeria, then Malawi – he witnessed the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Nigerian Biafran War, from 1967 to 1970
Today Fr Frawley remains a missionary, his life dedicated to his parishioners and improving their physical and infrastructural environments – he also provides pastoral care for his parishioners
He is home in Clare at the moment until September.
