The first ever review of childcare costs in Ireland finds more than half of lower earners with young children can’t afford to work
The independent report finds Ireland has the second highest cost of childcare in the OECD, as a percentage of the average wage, and a person on that income would spend most of their salary on preschool costs
It’s recommending that the government provide childcare support for the long-term unemployed and tax breaks for lower earning families
Donegal County Childcare Committee – who commissioned the report – is hoping the government will now take action
The report’s author Alan Gray of Indecon International Economic Consultancy Group discussed the findings with John.

Claire Touhy of the Lifford Childcare Crèche in Ennis gave her reaction
Their crèche cares for 35 children from 6 months to preschool age – they open at 7.30am until evening time – have 8-9 staff and do school pick-ups too
The costs are kept as low as possible – but she said the cost of childcare is led by the people employed to take for them.
