Morning Focus Tuesday 5th August

On Tuesdays Morning Focus John began by speaking to Mary Fogarty INMO Industrial Relations Officer as the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation says it is very concerned about a spike in the numbers of people on Trolleys at University Hospital Limerick in July.  According to the organisation's own figures 475 people were on the temporary beds in the accident and Emergency Department at Dooradoyle and in wards above capacity last month. That's up 215 on July of 2013 and follows May and June in which numbers appeared to be on the decline.  Mary told John they are very worried about safety at the hospital.

Up next John was joined by Marie Kehoe-O'Sullivan – Director of Quality and Safety Improvement for HIQA as The Health Information and Quality Authority has begun a nationwide public consultation on new National Standards for nursing homes and residential care settings providing services to older people.  Marie Kehoe-O'Sullivan, Director of Quality and Safety Improvement at HIQA, said "It must be noted however that only 1 of the 566 centres inspected by HIQA in 2013 resulted in enforcement procedures being taken. This is clear evidence of regulation working for the benefit of the people using these services."

John Finn is a Lisdoonvarna Native living in London.  He moved to Manchester in the 70's. John was on Morning Focus to talk about his son Martin.  They visit Clare regularly; Martin's a big fan of the music scene here.  Martin Finn is so severely autistic he has never spoken a full sentence.  Aged 23, he can string no more than three words together at a time and does not understand them, reports the Sunday People.  But Martin has been able to break out of his lonely world because of an astonishing singing voice.  Not only can he perform pop and country songs pitch-perfect, but he mimics many of the artists as he takes part in concerts across Britain, often bringing audiences to tears.

Clare Dog Warden Frankie Coote joined John for his regular slot with advice on proper animal care and animal owners' legal responsibilities. Contact Clare Animal Shelter on 065 6820393.
