Morning Focus Tuesday April 9

On Tuesday’s Morning Focus we heard James Reilly, Minister for Health exclusive interview with John Cooke during his visit to Ennis General Hospital.

The Health Minister has insisted the future of hospital services in Clare is secure with the official opening of the new 50 bed ward blocks and endoscopy services in Ennis
Minister James Reilly has paid his first official visit to Ennis General in the last hour, and says there’s a bright future for the local hospital despite changes to A and E and acute medical services there in recent years
Minister Reilly has also faced questions on overcrowding at the region’s main Accident and Emergency centre in Limerick, where 38 patients were on trollies during one recent day of overcrowding.

Margaret Thatcher was elected as British Prime Minister in 1979 and as she arrived at 10 Downing Street to take up her historic role as leader of the country  – she made one of her most memorable speeches

There were many memorable speeches to follow and In the years that followed Margaret Thatcher proved herself a formidable political performer, earning the title the Iron Lady:
in her speech to the Conservative Party Conference on 10 October 1980 she coined another phrase regarding her refusal to change her economic policies that became something of a thatcherite motto

John spoke about the Iron Lady’s legacy with Dr Lawrence Goldman of St Peter’s College, Oxford and the Editor of the Dictionary of National Biography in Britian.

Paul Touhy of Michael Houlihan and Partners, Ennis is a volunteer solicitor with Clare Citizens’ Information Service’s Free Legal Advice Clinics
He joined John in studio to discuss the court system and give a run down of what they deal with
Starting with the small claims court going up to the high court to include details of the monetary amount you can claim in each court and the types of claims you can bring in each court
Also will discuss the proposed changes in the monetary limits for the district, circuit and high court which is topical at the moment as changes are on the way
 
Dr Simon Berrow of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group had a word with John from Bunratty
The IWDG plan a rescue attempt for the three dolphins trapped in shallow water in Bunratty possibly tomorrow or Thursday
The dolphins have been there for the past ten days and need to get back to salt water soon.

Catherine Burke from Lissycasey and Eileen Downes from Ennis both have sons with special needs and are members of the Clare Special Needs Parents Support Group
They joined John in studio to discuss a local campaign they are running at present to collect old mobile phones – when they collect a certain amount they receive an ipad for an autistic child’s education
There are posters and leaflets doing the rounds with details of drop off points if you would like to support this collection
Their target is over 2,000 mobiles phones
There are almost one hundred members of this group in Clare.

A collection box for the autism phone appeal will be in Clare FM recpetion until Friday April 19th.
