On today’s edition of Morning Focus John Cooke was joined by Michael McNamara, Labour TD from Scarriff and Declan Collison from the Shannon Protection Alliance, Dromineer to talk about proposals to use water from Lough Derg to service the Dublin area. Irish Water has started work on a 500 million euro project to supply Dublin with water from the River Shannon. It is seeking tenders for a Survey Specialist to examine the water quality at Lough Derg and the Parteen Basin, from where the water will be sourced. The project has been met with fierce opposition here in Clare.
Also joining John on today’s show was Martina Moloney and Gerard Mulqueen are residents of Dooras, O'Callaghan's Mills. They’ve been cut off by flooding since before Christmas. The water from Doon Lake continues to flood the land. Martina has two young children in primary school and has now moved out of her home so her children can attend school. While Gerard’s elderly mother hasn’t left the family home in weeks. Gerard is using a boat to access cattle and to get out to shops. Bodyke Fine Gael Councillor Joe Cooney also joined the conversation to talk about what can be done to alleviate this situation for residents in the area.
Sharon Cahir of Cahir & Co Solicitors is a Volunteer Solicitor with the Free Legal Advice Clinic, provided by the Clare Citizens’ Information Centre. Sharon dealt with issues raised in the Macra na Feirme report of 2013 regarding succession and farming which highlights no' of farmers with no will or succession plan , ageing population of farmers, concerns raised by farmers before transfer, what happens to a single farmers farm if he has no will in place when he passes away? What happens if a married farmer dies without a will and he has only kids or kids and wife and farm in his name only?
Lahinch artist Michael Hanrahan was also on today’s show. Michael is back in Clare after a month on Cunard's World Cruise to South America, which called to Florida, Barbados, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. He received an interesting letter on his return from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth relating to President Michael D Higgins’ official visit to U.K in April.
