Six former Senators have written to the Irish Times to initiate a campaign to save the Seanad
They are calling for reform rather than abolition and say such a body could play a valuable political and constitutional role

On Tuesday’s Morning Focus John Cooke was joined by former two-time Senator Brendan Daly and current Senator Tony Mulcahy to discuss abolition or reform of the second house of the Oireacthas

They also discussed the possible abolition of town councils by Environment Minister Phil Hogan

Today is the Samaritans national fundraising and awareness day
24:7 is aimed at highlighting the charity’s round-the-clock availability to people seeking emotional support

Gerry Dobbins, Director of the Clare and Ennis branch of the Samaritans and Peadar White from Ennis, a well known vintage car enthusiast, joined John in studio
Peadar is organising  a recreation of the 1901 Motor Tour of Ireland as a fundraiser for the Samaritans and is asking people to donate and participate on Wednesday 8th August – if you would like to get involved contact Peadar on 086 814 0020 or drop into The Halfway House on the Limerick Road
