Morning Focus Tuesday November 6

On Tuesday’s Morning Focus John Cooke spoke with Independent TD Shane Ross and Business Editor with the Sunday Independent Nick Webb about their new book ‘The Untouchables’

In this book the two authors shine a light into dark corners of official Ireland to show that the blame for running the country into the ground goes well beyond Fianna Fáil, that a dismaying number of the people who should share the blame are still in situ, and that the bad old mindsets haven’t been shifted
They detail the destructive culture of cronyism that afflicts so much of Irish life, from the boards of the leading companies to the appointment of judges
They trace how the same civil servants, estate agents and bankers who presided over the crash have in many cases been rewarded with important new jobs
They investigate the workings of the law firms, lobbyists and consultancies that seem to have their fingers in every pie

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are neck and neck in polls ahead of today’s presidential election – nationwide polls show the two locked in one of the closest presidential races in recent US history
Both candidates will spent yesterday in a campaigning frenzy, focusing on the all-important swing states
Ohio is seen as the king-maker – with both candidates visiting today and over the weekend
Polling stations opened around three hours ago in the tiny town of Dixville Notch in New Hampshire, the rest of the country’s stations begin to open at 11am our time – starting on the East Coast
We heard the final election pleas of President Barrack Obama, the Democratic candidate and
Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate and John spoke with Prof Steven Knowlton of the
Journalism Department, Dublin City University, to get his take on how the race will go.

Town Councils in Clare could be leading a protest to the Dail – or even Aras an Uachtaran in the fight against their abolition
Independent Members of Ennis Town Council described Minister Phil Hogan’s plans for local government reform as a hatchet job and a sad day for local democracy as councillors reacted to news of their imminent demise, and planned to fight back
In particular there were calls on Fine Gael Councillors to Lobby their TD’s and Minister Hogan to reverse the decision – Clare FM’s John Cooke spoke to a number of FG and Independent members to hear their views
We heard from Mary Howard of Fine Gael; Michael Guilfoyle – Independent; Johnny Flynn of Fine Gael; Frankie Neylon – Independent and Mary Coote Ryan of Fine Gael.
