Morning Focus Tuesday August 9

Prices at the pumps have risen by almost six per cent in the past 12 months
According to an AA Ireland survey, the average cost of running a small family car is now just over 11-thousand-800 euro, up by over 600 euro on figures for last year
In June 2010, petrol cost 133 point 3 cent per litre, but by June of this year that had risen to 151 point 7 cent

The children’s charity Barnardos yesterday published its annual School Costs Survey, it said that the message from parents responding to the survey is very clear: families are struggling to meet the extensive costs of sending children to school
Catherine Joyce, Advocacy Manager with Barnardos explained more of the findinds to Ed Myers. She said parents responding to the survey have overwhelmingly responded to say that despite the recession the costs of sending their children to school have increased this year

John Leech, Chief Executive of Irish Water Safety discussed water safety with Clare FM’s Ed Myers this morning – as the last Bank Holiday of the Summer gets underway. The message of being safe in and around water is vital this weekend as many make the big exodus to coastal parts of the county and indeed to lakes shores.
According to IWS, in 2010, 5 people drowned aged under 24, 5 drowned aged 25-45 and alarmingly 16 people drowned aged 45-65. This clearly demonstrates that regardless of age, one is never too old to learn how to stay safe around water

Yesterday a government Minister has admitted the flat rate household being introduced next year is likely to be increased
Those opposed to the €100 annual charge which was announced yesterday have claimed it is a "foot in the door" and will be significantly hiked in the years ahead
It is expected a number of low-income households will be given a waiver from the charge
