Clare Government TD Says Storm Repair Works Can Begin

Clare TDs from opposite sides of Leinster House have clashed on the government's response to the storms which battered County Clare and Ireland's west coast at the beginning of the year.

Fine Gael's Pat Breen sasy money already allocated to Clare should be sufficient for widespread works to begin, but Fianna Fáil's Timm Dooley says the coalition is keeping the money back to fund pre-election tax cuts.

It's many months since the winter storms caused 36.8 million euro worth of damage in Clare, but concern remains in many of the hardest-hit communities that flood protection works, and in some cases, substantive repairs have yet to begin.

Clare County Council has been given 16.8 million to pay for this, but is awaiting a government decision on a second multi-million euro application so it knows how much it can spend.

It's feared these delays will leave homes and businesses throughout the county exposed this winter, and perhaps beyond that also.

On Clare FM's Morning Focus today, Fine Gael TD Pat Breen said he hopeful a decision would be made shortly, and that dialogue is continuing between the Council and government.

He also thinks enough money has been put in place for works to begin.

However, the delay in deciding on the Council's second application was criticised by Clare's Fianna Fáil TD this morning.

Councillors had hoped an announcement on money would be made after this week's cabinet meeting, the last before the summer, and Timmy Dooley is concerned this isn't the case.
