Council: Charges Disputes Between Irish Water And Residents

Clare County Council is staying out of any potential disputes between Irish Water and local authority tenants who do not pay their bills.

In a brief statement, the Council has told Clare FM that it's understanding is that matters relating to water charges are directly between the occupier of a house and Irish Water itself.

Already, Wicklow County Council has told households on its Rental Accommodation Scheme that they could be kicked out for not paying the charges.

The Tanaiste has asked officials to investigate the claim.

Separately, rural residents WILL have access to some reliefs for the cost of providing their own water supplies.

The government announced tax refunds and other reliefs for water charges during this week's budget but Communications Minister Alex White told Clare FM that they would not be extended to people on group water supplies or who had installed their own wells.

Now, however, it's been confirmed that these people will be able to avail of a €100 payment if they are on the household benefits package or if they receive fuel allowance.

However, Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara is still seeking clarity on the tax credit announced this week.
