Clare County Council has defended its rates base after figures from IBEC suggested that companies here pay for more of the Council's budget than in other nearby counties.
39% of the local authority's funding is provided by rates payers, but the Council says a third of this is from one customer, namely the ESB.

When this is taken out of the equation, the Council says companies here are paying for 29% of its budget.
It also says that Clare does not receive a Local Government Fund General Purpose Grant allocation as would be the case in other areas.
