FG Mayor Quits Over Water Charges

The Mayor of Drogheda has become Fine Gael's first high profile resignation over the water charges.

Kevin Callan announced yesterday that he was stepping down from the party because of the Government's handling of the controversy.

He's to stay on as Mayor but will become an independent member of Louth County Council.

He's also called on Fergus O'Dowd, who helped set up Irish Water, to consider his own position.

Meanwhile, organisers of Saturday's anti-water charges demonstrations in Clare say they're thrilled with the level of support they've received.

Almost 2,500 people braved heavy rain to take part in protests in Ennis, Shannon and Westbury as part of a national day of demonstrations which saw over 100,000 people take to the streets.
