Fire crews at the scene of last night's fire in Knockanean on the outskirts of Ennis

Emergency services were called out late last night to a domestic fire at a property on the outskirts of Ennis.

The alarm was raised shortly after 11.00pm when a blaze was reported at a house at Knockanean on the Tulla Road adjacent to junction 13 off the M18 motorway.

Three units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis station and local Gardaí attended the scene. The National Ambulance Service was alerted but wasn’t required to attend the incident as the property was unoccupied at the time.

The house was described as being ‘well alight’ and the roof had collapsed into the house by the time emergency crews arrived.

Firefighters quickly began to deal with the fire and later brought in a hydraulic platform so crews could tackle the blaze from above. It’s understood that the house was unoccupied at the time.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of the blaze.

It was the second fire at the same property this year. Emergency services responded to a blaze at the house on February 9th last. Another house in the same development was extensively damaged by fire in 2015.

The development comprises six properties built by Clare County Council to house traveller families.

The scene has been preserved for technical examination and enquiries are currently ongoing.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that and “a criminal damage investigation has been initiated. “

“Anyone with information is urged to contact Gardaí at Ennis Garda Station on 065 6848100 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.”
