High Court Rejects West Clare Man’s Challenge Against Marriage Referendum

A High Court judge has rejected an application by a West Clare man for permission to bring a new legal challenge against the result of the same-sex marriage referendum.

Gerry Walshe of Lisdeen Road, Kilkee sought leave to apply for a judicial review of the decision to issue and sign the final referendum certificate in August while a challenge against the result was still in being.

That challenge was dismissed by the Supreme Court last week, and yesterday was told by the High Court that the returning officer did not act outside her powers.

Ms Justice Margaret Heneghan said Mr Walshe’s claim was "misconceived" and also awarded costs against him.
