At a meeting of the Shanon Municipal District Council, local Councillor John Crowe called for an explanation for the downgrading of the town's out of hours GP service, saying the doctor has been transferred to Ennis.

Councillor Crowe said any such closure would have serious repercussions for commnunities in the town and surrounding villages who rely on the service.

But in a statement to Clare FM News, Shannondoc says its Shannon Treatment Centre will NOT be closing.

The out-of-hours service notes that more than 100 people were treated at its Shannon centre last week.

Shannondoc says patients are given appointment times when the doctor is on site but that there are times when it 'augments' the centre in Ennis, when help is needed there.

It insists that this kind of cooperation ensures the best service for patients and the most effective use of resources.

Shannondoc has 6 treatment centres in County Clare, 3 in Limerick and a futher 3 in North Tipperary.
