Taoiseach Says He Respects UK’s Brexit Decision

The Taoiseach says he respects the UK's position on voting to leave the EU.

Speaking following an emergency cabinet meeting Enda Kenny said the Government has prepared for this eventuality.

He says there will be a number of key actions and the government will work to protect and advance this country's interests.

The Dáil's being recalled on Monday for a special meeting to discuss BREXIT – while the opposition will be briefed this afternoon on the Government's plans. 

In the past hour, Taoiseach Enda Kenny has issued a note of calm. 

The world has been reacting to the British decision to leave the European Union. 

The UK voted 52 per cent in favour of leaving the union. 

Leave campaigner Boris Johnson booed as he left his London home this morning. 

He's said the EU is no longer relevant to Europe. 

Boris is seen as a potential new Prime Minister – with David Cameron stepping down after his side's defeat.

There's been international reaction with French President Francios Hollande saying it puts the EU in difficulty. 

Angela Merkel said it's a blow, but Donald Trump welcomed the Brexit.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said it has significant implications for Ireland. 

With Northern Ireland voting to remain, Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness called for a poll on a united Ireland.

While Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wants another Independence Referendum. 

Back here at home, Clare's Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley has described the decision to leave the UK as regrettable, saying it won't benefit people here or in the UK.

And, while most people who spoke to Clare FM on the streets of Ennis earlier think it will be bad for Ireland, others say they understand why Britain has voted to leave.
