The first crash happened on Wednesday morning at around 8 o'clock when a 24-year-old woman was hit by a car in Glasson Village in Athlone.

She suffered serious injuries and was taken to Tullamore General Hospital.

She was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where she died yesterday evening.

A post mortem is to take place and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

Meanwhile, in Kerry, a woman in her 40s has died after a single vehicle-collision on the Ballyduff to Tralee Road at Ballincosig Cross in Lixnaw this morning.

Two teenagers who were passengers in the car were removed by ambulance to Tralee General Hospital where their condition is not yet known.

The road has been closed pending a technical examination of the area by Garda forensic collision investigators.

Here, Gardaí are urging drivers to proceed with caution this afternoon, after a morning of sub-zero temperatures.

The N85 Ennis/Ennistymon Road was closed for a time to allow for a truck which had been in an accident to be cleared.

In Ennis, Cahercalla Hill was also closed for over an hour after a number of cars slid on it in the icy conditions.

Gardaí ask motorists on the motorway to take their time, particularly between Crusheen and Gort, while in East Clare Gardaí say it's very dangerous between Killaloe and Broadford.
