More than 7 in 10 people in Ennis would like like to see ‘immediate’ pedestrianisation measures in the county town.
It follows a survey undertaken by Clare County Council which received nearly 1,800 responses.
The survey was conducted by the local authority back in October as measures to enhance accessibility and improve Ennis’ town centre experience were being examined.
1.796 responses were received by Clare County Council in total.
71.2 percent of these respondents said they wanted to see some form of pedestrianisation in Ennis ‘immediately’.
Just over 20 percent of those asked would be in favour of the move in the medium to long term, dependent on the provision of new infrastructure and services.
Just 8.5 percent of respondents indicated they did not favour any form of pedestriansation in the town.
Of the 1,643 people who indicated they’d like to see some form of pedestrianisation, 44 percent said they favoured a model of between 11am and 6pm, seven days a week.
More than 1 in 3 of those in favour of pedestriansation are in favour of it being implemented full time.
Clare County Council says the information from this survey will be fed into future transport planning for the town including the formulation of the Ennis Mobility Plan.
