On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan spoke with Jonathan Irwin,CEO of the Jack and Jill Foundation. The children’s charity is reassuring people that online donations at Jack & Jill are secure and much needed, as the organisation uncovered a credit card scam involving fake donations. In the last month and a half they have received and refunded over €130,000 via credit card donations which have been scammed from private credit cards, with individual amounts ranging from 2 cents up to €3,000, with the majority of donations under €5. These criminals use Jack & Jill and other charity websites to test and verify that the details are still active on the card they have stolen so that they can use it for further, bigger fraudulent transactions or sell it on to other criminals. They were made from skimmed cards linked to financial institutions in countries such as Luxembourg, Venezuela, South Korean, Puerto Rico, Italy and Ireland. The charity is reassuring the public that their website is secure and that all the illegal donations have been returned. Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation provides and funds home nursing care for 300 children up to the age of 4 with severe developmental delay as a result of brain damage, has issued a statement to reassure people that online donations are safe, in spite of a recent charity scam uncovered by Jack & Jill. Jack & Jill has supported 42 families in Clare since 1997, with 7 in the county under Jack & Jill’s wing today.

The Afternoon Show - Monday May 20th 2013

On Monday’s edition of The Afternoon Show Peter Murphy, Deputy CEO of Epilepsy Ireland, spoke to Gavin about National Epilepsy Week and the issues facing those that have the condition. Epilepsy Ireland is today encouraging people with epilepsy in Ireland to be aware of the dangers of generic substitution of epilepsy medications and to take specific actions to ensure that their epilepsy medications are not substituted. A system of generic substitution will soon be introduced by the Government through the Health (Pricing and Supply of Medical Goods) Bill, which is expected to be passed into law in the near future. Despite an intensive campaign driven by Epilepsy Ireland and supported by international evidence and national epilepsy expert opinion, the Bill will not make a specific exemption to exclude anti- epileptic drugs (AEDs) from substitution. Under the new system, a pharmacist will be able to dispense a generic version of a medicine, even when a specific brand has been prescribed. This advice is further explained in a new leaflet entitled “Accept No Substitute”, being launched today by Epilepsy Ireland. The leaflet is available on www.epilepsy.ie, from Epilepsy Ireland’s Head Office at 01 4557500 or any of the 10 offices nationwide.

Brendan Heneghan from the Ennis Teagasc branch also joined Gavin to discuss how one of Ireland’s staple food, the humble spud, is rising in cost. Families have been hit with a 10% hike in the cost of locally produced food because of the cold winter and delayed spring. Prices for staples like potatoes, broccoli, flour and meat have shot up since January 2012, according to the Central Statistics Office. The biggest hike was in a 10kg bag of spuds, which rose from €5.06 to €9.34 – or by 85%. CSO figures also show increases for broccoli (20%), brown flour (17%), topside or rib roast beef (14%) and a kilogramme of pork sausages (13%) amongst others.

Sarah Doran from Entertainment.ie also joined Gavin on the show to talk about this weekend’s Eurovision Song Contest 2013. Ireland came last in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 – with just three countries giving us 5 points. Denmark won the title with their song – Only Teardrops. But controversy abounds since Saturday night’s show as one of Ireland's previous seven winners was the target of a jibe by Swedish presenter Petra Mede. During the segment, Petra explained Johnny Logan had won the Eurovision three times. Footage was then shown of Linda Martin's winning song 'Why Me', which was written by Logan. Host Petra then suggested it was Johnny Logan in drag.

In our weekly “Calling Home” feature Inagh native, Margaret Shannon joined us from Charlotte, North Carolina. Margaret has spent the last 40 years in the US and spoke to Gavin about the time she left Clare, what she did and her life now in North Carolina. She also spoke of the role of the Clare Association in New York, with whom she volunteered and also the burgeoning Irish community in North Carolina.

If you or a loved one is living abroad we’d love to hear their story – please contact gathering@clare.fm

Orla Ni Eili and Abi Ladigbolu from the Clare Immigrant Support Centre were also in studio to discuss “A Taste of Africa”, which will take place in Clare County Council Foyer, New Road, Ennis from 12.30 – 14.30 on Wednesday 22nd May to mark Africa Day. This community event will share some aspects of the rich heritage of various African countries and will create an opportunity for both African and non African Clare residents to enjoy some time together on this special occasion. Africa Day this year marks 50 years of the African Union and African Independence, it provides an opportunity for all Africans – including those who have made Ireland their home and non Africans to celebrate Africa, its people and their potential at a time of great opportunity for the continent.

The Afternoon Show - Friday May 17th 2013

On The Afternoon Show today was our weekly Friday Panel who joined Gavin Grace in studio to talk about the major news events of the past seven days. In studio this afternoon was Aine Mae O’Mahony, who works in Media and PR, from Clahane, Martin McMahon, Clare Chairman of the ICMSA from O’Callaghan’s Mills and Verena Tarpey of Rape Crisis Mid West. For discussion on today’s panel was how the government this week announced the latest plans for Ireland's hospitals. The plan sees little change for Ennis General, but confirms that full A&E cover will be replaced with a medical assessment unit and a local injuries unit, open up to 12 hours day, 7 days per week. The panel were asked - how do you think the general public feel about the changes in healthcare in recent years? At a time when the Midwest's main accident and emergency unit at Limerick Regional records some of the longest queues in the country, do you feel people have any optimism about this plan? They also tackled the issue of rural isolation. The Vintners Federation of Ireland says 38 jobs are being lost in the pub trade every week, while people remain stranded on their own at home because of a lack of promised rural transport schemes. How big of an issue is this in Clare? Should the government be doing more? Also, for the week that’s in it, they spoke of how Ireland's Ryan Dolan is among 26 acts that will take to the stage in Malmo on Saturday night in the Eurovision Song Contest Final. We asked - are you looking forward to it? And what are your favourite Eurovision memories?

Today on the Friday Feature, Gavin was joined by Philip Moreau, our in studio Gardening Expert, who answered all of your gardening and horticulture related queries. Today he discussed different pests that can damage what you’ve planted and how to get rid of them. He also answered questions about flower feed, lawns, soil types and much more besides!

The results of a postmortum on the body of a Polish man who died after a hit and run in Ennis is expected to determine the direction of the Garda investigation
The father of one, named locally as Thomas Nowakowski - died just 100 metres from his home in Tobartascain on Wednesday night

It's understood Thomas Nowakowski was on two weeks holidays from his job at Hillbilly's fast food restaurant on O'Connell Street in Ennis town centre when he was struck by a car near his home in the Tobartascain area on Wednesday night
His wife and 18 month old daughter recently returned home to Poland for a brief visit
Yesterday Gardaí were making efforts to contact her while its understood a co- worker formally identified his remains following a postmortum carried out by Dr Marie Cassidy at the Mid West Regional Hospital in Limerick

Hillbilly’s Spokesperson Dermot Carberry said the staff at Hillbilly’s on O’Connell Street in Ennis are devastated at the loss of Thomas – a valued member of staff and a lovely person.

Agreement has been reached between unions and management in the Bus Éireann dispute over cost-saving measures
It followed around 23 hours of talks between the two sides facilitated by the Labour Relations Commission
If the proposed measures are accepted by trade union members, the agreement will begin on 1 June and run until January 2015
In a statement, the company said the measures will help protect the future of the company, 2,500 jobs and 300 routes around the country
John spoke with former Killaloe Councillor and NBRU Executive Member Tony O'Brien who said the agreement means that company executives are contributing and paying their way too.
