West Clare Pensioner Living Under Bridge For Five Months Offered Shelter After Makeshift Home Flooded

A West Clare pensioner whose stop-gap home has been ruined by flooding is still holding out hope for a bright future.

In June, 71 year-old Kit Smalley and his loyal beagle Yeoh (Yo -ah) relocated to a makeshift room under a bridge in Doonbeg village, while urgent remediation works were carried out on his tenancy of the previous eight years.

However , disaster recently struck for Kit, when on the night of a full moon and the river running very high downstream, four inches of rainwater filled his house.

Kit says that despite his abject situation, the support of the local community is helping him through the tough times.

Meanwhile after hearing Kit’s story, Morning Focus listener Stephen Downes told Clare FM he wanted to help provide shelter for the winter months.
