Solicitor For Family Of Aoife Johnston Says Reform Is Needed At University Hospital Limerick

The Solicitor for the family of a Shannon teenager who passed away in tragic circumstances at University Hospital Limerick insists the outcome of a new investigation into her death must effect permanent change to leadership at the facility.

It comes as the terms of reference for an independent inquiry into the death of Aoife Johnston who passed away from bacterial meningitis after spending twelve hours on a trolley in A&E were published by the HSE last week.

A prior review by the UL Hospitals Group found that escalation protocol was not adhered to on the night Aoife passed away, while the report also showed that a high turnover of staff led to low experience levels and low situational awareness.

Damien Tansey, Senior Counsel and Partner Damien Tansey Solicitors says while the family was disappointed not to be consulted on the terms of the new review, the emergency mandate at UHL needs urgent reform.
