Over 15,000 Patients Treated At Ennis Local Injury Last Year

The number of patients who received treatment at the Local Injury Unit in Ennis increased by 15% last year.

New figures released by the UL Hospitals Group show that over 40,000 people have attended this county’s LIU since 2019.

A total of 15,245 patients were treated at the Local Injury Unit in Ennis General Hospital last year.

The figure marks a 15% increase in the number of patients treated there in 2022 and a 32% increase in presentations on the 11,517 patients who received care there in 2019.

The facility caters for a wide range of injuries including, broken bones, sprains and strains, minor facial injuries such as oral, dental and nasal as well as minor scalds and burns.

Staffed by Emergency Medicine Consultant-led teams of Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Registrars, and administrative support, the Injury Units provide treatment for cases that are non-life threatening but still require prompt attention.

Additionally, wounds, scalp lacerations, small abscesses, boils splinters and objects stuck in eyes, ears or nose as well as minor head injuries where the patient has not had a loss of consciousness can also be dealt with.

In total since 2019, approximately 40,013 patients have attended the Local Injury Unit at Ennis General Hospital.

Last year, the LIU at St.John’s in Limerick saw the greatest amount of patients with 17,583 presentations, while 13,876 patients presented at Nenagh Hospital, bringing the total presentations across the UL Hospitals Group last year to 46,704.
