Two men have been killed in a tragedy on the River Shannon tonight.

The men had been carrying out remedial structural works on Thomond Bridge when a cable that was holding them in a platform cage suspended over the bridge, snapped, sending the men and the platform into the water.

A third man who was working in the cage managed to free himself and was rescued.

Limerick City and County Council this evening confirmed “two employees of a firm contracted to undertake remedial works to Thomond Bridge in Limerick City have died in a workplace incident this afternoon (Saturday).”

“The Council is liaising with the contractor in question, the Health & Safety Authority (HSA) and the Emergency Services in relation to the incident.”

“Limerick City and County Council wishes to extend its deepest sympathies to the families and colleagues of the deceased,” the statement concluded.
