A large-scale security operation is continuing at Shannon Airport after an aircraft diverted there this morning following a bomb threat.

The Turkish Airlines flight had 227 people on board, and touched down at 11 o'clock.

Passengers were evacuated from the Turkish Airlines operated Boeing 777-300, which had been en route from Houston, Texas to Istanbul when it diverted to Ireland.

It's understood that the bomb scare was sparked by a written note which had been found on board the aircraft by its crew.

The airport's emergency plan was put into affect as the aircraft approached Ireland.

Fire and medical personnel were dispatched to Shannon, along with Gardaí – some armed – while the Irish Coast Guard was also alerted.

After the plane touched down, the passengers and crew were evacuated to the terminal building.

They're been questioned by Gardaí, as searches of the plane and its contents are carried out.

This security operation continues, but as of yet no explosive material has been found.

It's not yet known whether the 227 people on board will be able to complete their journeys to Istanbul today, or whether they'll have to stay overnight in the region.
