The Communications Officer for the Killaloe Diocese says he's confident that Pope Francis will visit Ireland in 2018.

It follows reports that the pontiff has accepted an invitation to visit the country for the World Meeting of Families event in Dublin.

The only time a reigning Pope came to Ireland was in 1979, when Pope John Paul the 2nd visited a number of areas around the country including Galway and Limerick and departed through Shannon Airport.

But Fr Brendan Quinlivan is questioning whether Pope Francis will come to Clare, if the planned visit goes ahead
