A man has admitted trying to murder his ex-partner as she was on her way to work at a crèche near her home in Dublin in September 2014.
Denis Leahy of Queen Street, Dublin 7 initially denied the charge but changed his plea shortly after the prosecution opened its case this afternoon.
There was some confusion in the public gallery when Denis Leahy’s barrister asked the court registrar to put the attempted murder charge to his client again.
Gasps and tears followed after the 50-year-old changed his plea to guilty.
On the morning of September 23rd 2014, Rose Kenny was on her way to work at a crèche near her home at the School Street Flats in Dublin city.
A man was reading a newspaper at the bottom of the stairs outside. He was in her way and she politely excused herself. He replied by saying “you called the cops on me” and stabbed her repeatedly before fleeing the scene and dumping the knife.
She didn’t realise it was Denis Leahy – a man she’d been in a relationship with 15 years beforehand.
The court heard Leahy decided to take revenge because he thought Rose had told Gardai about some drugs he had in his house.
He has been remanded in custody and his sentence hearing will take place next month (July 14th).
