A former President of the European Parliament insists Ireland has a right to expect special consideration during Britain's EU exit.

Pat Cox has been speaking to Clare FM as all 28 EU leaders are to meet in Brussels this afternoon to discuss the fallout from the Brexit referendum.

The British Prime Minister will address his counterparts at a summit later, where he is expected to advise other European governments to heed the warnings from the UK’s vote.

A number of states are pushing for Britain to begin its exit as soon as possible, however David Cameron is unlikely to trigger article 50 in the Lisbon Treaty, and instead will pass this responsibility on to his successor.

Meanwhile, there are appeals for European leaders to recognise the impact the Brexit vote will have on Ireland.

Earlier, The Minister for Transport Shane Ross urged the Taoiseach to take a strong position in any talks.

While former President of the European Parliament Pat Cox has told Clare FM that Ireland is facing unique economic problems as a result of the vote and is calling for solidarity from our EU partners.

Meanwhile, Shannon Chamber says any opportunity to attract foreign investment companies to the region following the Brexit should be seized.

The Chamber's President has expressed disappointment over our largest trading partner's decision to leave the EU, saying it will take some time for the ramifications to become fully evident.

Juliet Dickerson says efforts should be made to ensure that investment coming from the UK comes to Shannon, rather than the east coast.
