A transatlantic passenger jet that was forced to divert to Shannon will continue its journey this afternoon.

The plane, operated under the British Airways-owned OpenSkies brand, was flying from Paris Orly to Newark when it turned around following indications of a fire alarm last night.

Emergency services were put on standby ahead of its landing just after 9:30, while the aircraft had performed a fly-by over the control tower before landing to ensure its landing gear had deployed properly.

The plane had 89 passengers and five crew on board, and they stayed overnight in the Shannon region, but are scheduled to depart this afternoon at 2pm
