The Chair Of Clare's Housing Policy committee is confident that the government is serious about tackling the county's housing list.

Over 1,000 people have dropped off the list here following a Council review, however there is still a significant number seeking housing assistance.

The Council's review means the housing list here has now dropped from around 3,500 to at least 2,314.

Over 100 more applications were being processed when the figure was sent to local representatives, so that's likely to climb somewhat.

The Council stresses that some are only on the list in order to access Rent Allowance or HAP payments, and are not in need of an actual home.

Shannon Councillor and Housing Committee Chair Gerry Flynn says the review was an important exercise.

He now wants the government to provide the resources needed to tackle the problem.

Meanwhile a fellow Housing Committee member believes public-private partnerships are the most effective way of increasing Clare's housing stock.

Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy says the council is already taking steps to provide more accomodation and will examine a range of options to do this.
