On Monday’s Today Show Gavin spoke with Olive Halpin of the Building of Hope Project who is currently in Mombasa, Kenya.  The organisation has undertaken to build a Residential Home for blind, orphaned children in Likoni, Mombasa. The current living conditions for these children is unacceptable as volunteers witnessed first hand during their 2010 project when 200 volunteers visited the school and accommodation and were appalled that in this day and age children are forced to live in such conditions. Ennis man Pat Barry also spoke to Clare FM’s Gavin Grace – Pat is a volunteer with the group and is acting as site foreman for the build. He discussed the work that needs to be done in Likoni but also the level of satisfaction the volunteers will have when the children are able to use the new facility.

If you would like to make a donation to the Building of Hope project you can do so at AIB, Bank Place Ennis Account no 1550 1009 or see their website www.buildingofhope.org

One lucky person in the county is €250,000 richer today as the winning Lotto Plus 1 ticket was sold in Ennis over the weekend. Barry Lynch of Centra on the Gort Road talked to the Today Show and appealed to the winner of the ticket worth €250,000 to contact the National Lottery HQ to claim their prize.  The winning ticket – the only one in Ireland – was bought on Friday or Saturday.

Miriam O’Neill of AA Roadwatch discussed the results of a new survey with The Today Show. One in eight drivers on Irish roads have either had a near miss or collision with a cyclist within the last two years. The study which looks at incidents involving vulnerable road users also indicates that 11% of motorists have been involved in similar incidents involving a pedestrian or an animal. The study – which polled a sample of more than 12,500 drivers in Ireland, equally reveals that 5% have either hit or almost hit a motorcyclist while 0.7% said they’d done the same with someone on horseback.

Today is officially "The Most Depressing Day of the Year" and has been dubbed “Red Monday” because money worries are believed to be damaging the emotional health of many people. Gavin spoke with Fergal O’Connor, business and personal coach, Synergy BDS in Sixmilebridge about how people can stay positive despite challenging times. Fergal gave advice on how to deal with your circumstances by focussing only on what you can control rather than things you can’t.

Kerry Houlihan, Fundraising Officer with Rehab spoke to Gavin as part of their awareness campaign for a fundraising challenge taking place throughout the year.
Rehab is calling on Clare adventurers and all those with an interest in the outdoors to sign up for the ultimate challenge of 2012, while at the same time raising money for HeadsUp, Rehab’s youth suicide prevention project. The Five Peaks Challenge takes place over three days, from 3 – 5 August, with participants climbing the five highest mountains in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.
