The US Presidential candidates have begun a final blitz of swing states as the campaign enters its final weekend. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney had been focused on the fallout from super storm Sandy in recent days. There was a boost for Obama last night when New York’s Mayor, the ex-Republican Michael Bloomberg gave him his support.
Fiona Ryan, CEO of Alcohol Action Ireland spoke to Gavin following a special conference on alcohol yesterday. The key message that was delivered at a conference in Dublin, which was organised by Alcohol Action Ireland, is that minimum pricing for alcohol must be introduced as a matter of urgency. The group says a coalition of 27 bodies – which deal with the realities of drink-related harm – support the call.
Professor David Farrell is the Head of Politics at UCD, he spoke to The Afternoon Show about how in the coming weeks, 66 Irish citizens will be randomly selected to sit on the country’s new constitutional convention. Ahead of that, an event is taking place in Dublin this afternoon, to look at the experiences other countries have had in carrying out the same exercise. Academics and experts in various fields will discuss eight areas where the Irish constitution could be changed in the future – such as same sex marriage and the voting age.
Glenn Adams is from Bunratty but is now living in Yonkers, New York. He spoke to Gavin about the fallout from Super storm Sandy. Four days after Sandy hit the North-East of the United States, the clean-up operation is continuing. New York’s subway has partially re-opened and the city hosts it’s annual marathon this weekend, but many are left without power. Glenn got in touch with Clare FM via twitter to share a photo of his own lucky escape as a tree severely damaged the home of his next door neighbour.
Dr Hugh Maguire is the Director of the Hunt Museum, Limerick. He joined the show to discuss a special event taking place early next week. On Monday, 5th November, the Hunt Museum are inviting people to bring their WWI memorabilia (anything from diaries to helmets and from medals to postcards) to the museum, where it will be digitised and added to the online archive, along with the stories that bring these objects to life. There will also be historians and experts on hand to talk to visitors about the significance of their finds.
