On The Afternoon Show today, Máire Moynahan spoke with Stephen Lynam, Director of Retail Ireland. Retail Ireland wants consumers to play their part in stemming retail crime. Over half a billion euro worth of stock is stolen from shops every year, and a new survey released today shows that 82% of retailers are affected.Retail Ireland say the recession is to blame for the rise as people are purchasing cheaper products, which in some cases are items that have been stolen from shops.The group is calling on the government to put the necessary resources in place to protect retailers from a rise in crime.

Peadar King is a Documentary Maker and a native of Moyasta. Peadar spoke to Máire about his new TV documentary series, which started on RTE last week entitled "What in the World". The series seeks to raise public awareness of global economic inequalities and human rights violations – the series was filmed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Timor L’este and Honduras.

John Sweeney is a leading Climatologist and Nobel Laureate based at NUI Maynooth. He joined the show following the news that a West Clare family is recovering after the shock of a lightning strike at their home on Saturday. It happened at the Haugh’s house in Farrihy shortly after four o’clock – the lightning struck during a torrential shower of hailstones.  John spoke about the weather systems that could have caused the phenomenon.

Clare FM’s 50 cent appeal is back and this year we’re raising money for another 4 local charities – all providing vital community services across the county. Clare FM’s Máíre Moynahan has visited each of the four charities and today we heard from staff and volunteers at Kilmaley Daycare Centre about the work they do.  We also heard from some of the elderly residents in the Kimaley area who access the services at the Daycare Centre. Also on the show – Trudi van der Elsen, Curator of The Courthouse Gallery, Ennistymon talked about how there are 3 new exhibitions on view at the gallery. “Something of the Night” consists of paintings and a sculptural installation by Mary Noonan and Peter Burns. It runs until 29th November. Carles Casasín is showing his animations entitled “Hunger / Lullaby / Melancholia”, which also run until 29th November, while “Entropical” is an exhibition of paintings by Rupert Bagwell and runs in the Red Couch Space also until November 29th.

Máire also checked in on Ross O’Donoghue – Clare FM’s Breakfast Show host who has moved into the window at Madden’s Furniture on Station Road in Ennis to raise money for Clare FM’s 50 Cent Appeal!
