On The Afternoon Show today Gavin Grace spoke with Marcella Clancy, from Kilnaboy, and Kieran McCarthy, from Shannon, about the latest news on a new drug to be made available to Cystic Fibrosis sufferers. Minister for Health James Reilly has announced that the Government has approved the cystic fibrosis drug Kalydeco for use in Ireland from 1st March. The National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics recently recommended against its sanction for use at a cost of more than €234,000 per patient per year.  Marcella and Kieran are secretary and Clare Chairperson of CF support group – TLC4CF, and both are parents of children with the illness. TLC4CF was founded by friends and family of People with Cystic Fibrosis (PWCF) in Tipperary, Limerick and Clare and are a regional branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland, dedicated to improving services for people with Cystic Fibrosis living in the Mid West.

Eoin Gavin is the President of the Irish Road Hauliers and is based in Bunratty – he joined Gavin to discuss Friday’s traffic chaos following the oil spill on the N18. An investigation’s underway into the source of the spillage which caused traffic chaos for thousands of motorists on Friday and Saturday on the dual carriageway. It’s reported the final clean up bill for the spill which resulted in the closure of a section of the Limerick to Ennis road could run into tens of thousands of Euro.

Jonathan O’Gorman is a Poet based in Spanish Point and joined Gavin in studio to talk about what has inspired his poetry. Originally from Ardpatrick, Jonathan has penned a book on the Celtic Tiger years is calling on unemployed people from all over Ireland to sign off the dole on February 13th. Jonathan O’Gorman who now lives in Spanish Point believes that the mass action would have a significant macro-economic effect and would put pressure on the government to lower the general cost of living. He says it would “put an end to the ridiculous situation whereby innocent citizens are forced to pay off the gambling losses of private bankers.

Frank Minogue from Miltown Malbay also joined the show to let us know about a special event next weekend. The John Minogue Memorial 8k Fun Run/Walk and 10/40/80K Cycle takes place on Sunday February 10th from the Community Centre in Miltown Malbay.  The cycle starts at 10am and the run at 12.30pm.  It’s in aid of the William Winder Foundation, Burren Sub Aqua Club and the Brothers of Charity, Miltown Malbay.
