On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Gavin was joined by a panel of speakers to talk about the major news stories of the past week.  Today he was joined by Ann Cronin, an Ennis Artist and mother, Martin McMahon, Clare Chair of the ICMSA from O’Callaghan’s Mills and Tomas Mac Chonmara from Cuimhneamh an Chlair.  Among the news topics discussed this afternoon was how RTÉ has released figures for its top ten earners for 2010 and 2011. The broadcaster has also revealed details of its latest contract agreements for the first time. The panel also discussed how Minister Leo Varadkar has apologised for remarks on insolvency rules suggesting that women would have to give up their jobs if they earned less than their childcare expenses. He said he was sorry if he said anything that contradicted comments made by Taoiseach Enda Kenny that women would not be forced to give up their jobs if their child care costs exceeded their salaries. Also the panel spoke about their views on Good Friday and the alcohol ban.  The Restaurants Association of Ireland this week condemned the ban, saying that the law is unacceptable at such a busy time for the tourism, restaurant and hospitality industry. Chief Executive of the RAI, Adrian Cummins said that the law is not only affecting our image abroad, but business internally aswell.

Also on today’s Friday Feature on The Afternoon Show, Brian McManus of Clare Youth Service joined Gavin in studio to talk about the latest news from the charitable group. Brian and a group from CYS have just returned from a personal development trip from which several community actions will result.  He also discussed Youth Work Ireland week, child protection training currently being undertaken by volunteers and the latest from the CYS competitions held around the county.

Rob Hope, Lead Singer with Limerick/Clare band Senekah also spoke to Gavin today. The group is going from strength to strength since their formation in 2005.  Members include Rob on lead vocals, bass-player Yvonne Conaty, Sixmilebridge drummer Daragh O’Loughlin and Scariff guitarist Brendan O’Gorman. Their latest single “Ugly” is receiving rave reviews – especially on Youtube where it’s already gotten over a quarter of a million hits. Recorded over the course of twenty seven days in the former Bishop’s Palace in Limerick, the new album Human Relations, produced by Noel Hogan of The Cranberries, is a confident step forward for the band in both songwriting and recording. Senekah will be in The Mill in Sixmilebridge on May 3rd for the official launch of the new album and also in Kenny’s in Lahinch on May 4th.

Also Kevin McGillicuddy from Clare FM Sport joined the show for a look ahead to the weekend’s fixtures, including Clare versus Tipperary in the National Hurling League and to what’s coming up on tonight’s Sideline View.
