Joining Gavin Grace in studio for today’s Friday Panel on The Afternoon Show was Manuel di Lucia, Businessman and member of Kilkee Search and Rescue, Ann Cronin, Artist, Mother and Student from Ennis and Bernadette Kenny from Tara Healing Arts, Ennis and Bluebox Limerick.  The panel discussed numerous topics that made the headlines this week. They spoke of how the Taoiseach is vowing that abortion legislation to be enacted here will be in line with the X case, despite opposition from within his own party and from consultant psychiatrists.  Ministers have this week failed to reach agreement on a new bill, which has reportedly opened a rift between the coalition partners, as leaked draft legislation confirms plans for up to six doctors would be needed to assess whether or not a pregnant woman is at risk of suicide before granting an abortion. Also for discussion – how Kerry TD Michael Healy Rae says a debate is needed on whether people should be allowed to buy guns to protect themselves.   Legally people can own a firearm for a number of uses; however the protection of yourself or your home is not one of those uses.  We asked the panel – should that change? Ann, Manuel, Bernadette and Gavin also spoke about pensions. Forcing people who have no pension to take one out risks pushing them deeper into debt, a major new report has warned. And it could mean some workers having less money to educate their children.  But despite these huge downsides, a new report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) recommends mandatory pensions for those not in a work-based scheme. Also our panellists spoke on a much lighter topic this afternoon, that of Director Michael Bay who has apologised for his film ‘Armageddon’.  The disaster movie starring Bruce Willis was slated by critics but made 500 million dollars when released in 1998.  They discussed which films they would like to get an apology for!

Patrick Holford is Britain’s best-selling author and leading spokesman on Nutrition. He joined Gavin on the show and answered your lifestyle queries. He discussed how to avoid the mid-life meltdown and beat the bulge. He’s hosting a one day workshop at The Savoy Hotel, Limerick this Saturday at 10am – 5pm. He will cover issues like weight loss, gaining energy, diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure, heart disease, pain and inflammation, your mood and memory, stress and anxiety, balancing your hormones and slowing down the ageing process!

Anthony “Axel” Foley, Ireland Forwards Coach from Killaloe also spoke to Gavin ahead of tomorrow night’s game. Munster takes on Clermont in their Heineken Cup semi final tomorrow night. The team left from Shannon this morning where Gavin met them before boarding. While Kevin McGillicuddy of Clare FM Sport was also in studio to tell us what’s coming up on tonight’s Sideline View.
