Joining Máire Moynahan on today’s Afternoon Show was Irish Olympian and sporting hero Sonia O’Sullivan who was in Ennis today to help commemorate the visit of Muhammed Ali to Clare’s County town. The 3rd annual “Be The Best That You Can Be” Seminar took place in Glór, today. Over 400 2nd year secondary school students attended the event, which is held each year to commemorate Ennis’ links with former World Heavyweight Boxing champion Muhammad Ali. The event is hosted by Ennis Town Council and Clare Youth Service. The Seminar featured guest presentations by Sonia O’Sullivan, John Lillis and Aine Mae O’ Mahony. There were film screenings by Clare Youth Service on giving up smoking, a Clare Garda Youth Diversion Project on bullying and workshops on ‘Disability in Sport’, Film-making, Yoga, and Drugs and Alcohol Information. Sonia spoke about achieving your goals through hard work, persistency and determination to be the best you can be. Máire also spoke to Aine Mae O’Mahony from Lahinch; Aine Mae lost her sight 6 years ago but overcame all obstacles to follow her dream of becoming a radio producer.  Also joining Máire was Aoife Guilfoyle who works with Clare Youth Service.  She spoke about how important it is to help motivate teens and let us know about a special open day at The Junction Youth Centre at Cloughleigh, Ennis on Friday September 27th.

Aidan Courtney of The Ennis Book Shop was in studio to review “Maeve’s Times: A collection of Maeve Binchy’s Irish Times journalism” and also Sunday Business Post Deputy Editor and Political Editor – Pat Leahy’s The Price of Power: Inside Ireland’s Crisis Coalition.

Actor, Comedian, Musician and Producer Pat Shortt was also a special guest of The Afternoon Show. Pat is a familiar face on stage and screen – his long list of credits include his film role in Lenny Abrahamson’s Garage for which he received serious acclaim for his portrayal of Josie and an IFTA, having formed one half of D’Unbelievables with partner Jon Kenny – he provided much fun and comedy to his Irish audience over the years on the stage.  He also brought us Killinaskully, Sgt. Mattie and of course one of the best loved characters in Fr. Ted – Tom.  He has just returned from London where, following rave reviews, performed in Martin McDonagh’s – The Cripple of Inishmaan” alongside Daniel Radcliffe.  He’s soon to star in yet another film – Life’s a Breeze (with Fionnuala Flanagan), which has been touring the international film festival circuit.  Pat’s show “I Am The Band” comes to the Lady Gregory in Gort on Saturday 28th September.

 

Rhonda Murphy and Marie Moloney from the Alzheimers Society of Ireland – Clare Branch also joined Máire in studio as this Saturday is World Alzheimer’s Day. The local branch is setting up an information spot in the Tesco shopping centre tomorrow between 10am and 2pm. The aim of this is to answer any questions or worries people may have about themselves or a loved one they are concerned about- they will have information leaflets available and people there to answer any questions – see also www.alzheimer.ie The group are currently looking for carers – if you’re eligible for a CE Scheme and would be interested in applying you can contact Pauline Mulcahy on 065 6845 835
