On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Michael Treacy, Regional Communications Manager with Irish Water joined Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan. Water is an important part of our daily lives. Many of us take it for granted – we wake up in the morning, take a shower, brush our teeth, grab a cuppa and head out for the day but as a recent survey by Irish Water reveals, the majority of those surveyed (79%) misjudge how much water they actually use at home on a daily basis. Showers are one of the biggest consumers of water in Irish households. The average 7 minute shower uses up to 49 litres of hot water while power showers can use up to 175 litres in the same period. Brushing your teeth with the tap running is one of the most common ways of wasting water in the home with approximately six litres of water used per minute. By turning off the tap when brushing your teeth, it’s estimated that up to 7,000 litres of water can be saved per year.

Bernard Purcell is the Editor of the Irish World Newspaper in London and joined us for a look at the main news stories across the pond including the latest news concerning the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and other stories that are impacting the Irish community in the UK.

Brendan Gleeson is a Photographer based in Limerick. His wide ranging photographic exhibition entitled, “ People of the Mid- West” will be launched in Limerick on Thursday October 17th next at the Clarion hotel. Brendan has over twenty years experience working as a Photographer in Limerick for many of the local and national newspapers. Over this time Brendan has amassed a considerable archive of photographs capturing life changing moments and memories in the lives of hundreds of people across the fields of news and the everyday life and events of people living in the Mid West Region. This exhibition will also include many of Brendan’s photos from the world of sport, including many action shots from the current all Ireland Hurling Champions,  as well as memorable shots of  Clare  All Ireland sporting hero Colm  Galvin,  and  the accomplished team coach Davy Fitzgerald, all of  which capture moments in time which can never be repeated.

Celebrity Chef Neven Maguire was also a guest of the show. Neven has launched a programme, which seeks to encourage Irish mums and dads to get cooking with their children, and nurture a lifelong love for wholesome food.  Ben’s Beginners believes that when parents and children move from setting the table to cooking together, it leads to a better relationship with food, with healthy meal preparation and with each other.  The programme begins with a cooking contest to inspire families to create a child-friendly rice recipe and upload it to the Uncle Ben’s Facebook page to share their passion for healthy eating. All those who enter are in with the opportunity to win €5,000 cash prize for them and their family plus a €10,000 donation for their school to fund a healthy initiative. More information on the competition is available by logging onto www.facebook.com/UncleBensIreland.
