Joining Máire on The Afternoon Show today was Bernie Wright from the Alliance for Animal Rights. She joined the show from a protest outside the Department of Transport today, which was held to call for Sulkie Racing to be banned. The practice involves harness-racing a horse and trap – and is becoming more common on Irish roads. Animal Rights groups say it’s dangerous for road users and has been fatal for some horses.

Dr. Catherine Curtin from the Limerick Chiropractic Clinic in Clonlara also joined the show to talk about ‘Straighten Up and Move’ – the message from the Chiropractic Association of Ireland (CAI) as they launch the fifth annual Straighten Up Ireland Week. A highlight of the week is World Spine Day. CAI is urging adults and children throughout Ireland to do a little work on the flexibility, balance and strength of their spines to reduce the risk of future back problems and improve overall health.

Bobby Lynch from Killaloe  spoke to Máire about the 26th MS READaTHON and reminded young people that there is still time to sign up. The MS READaTHON reading month runs until November 11th and any primary or secondary school student can take part through their school, library, local bookshop or online. MS Ireland’s biggest annual fundraising campaign, MS READaTHON provides vital local services and support for more than 8,000 people with MS and their families in Ireland.  Bobby, who has MS, discussed the importance of fundraising for MS Ireland and the knock on effect of improving childhood literacy.  For more information see www.msreadathon.ie or contact the Limerick / North Tipp MS office on 061 303802.
