On Friday Afternoon Show it was time for the first panel discussion of the New Year. Jining Máire in studio was Aine Mae O’Mahony, Lahinch resident and member of the Lahinch Playground Committee, Cormac O’Sullivan of DNG O’Sullivan Hurley Auctioneers in Ennis and Kilkee businessman, Manuel di Lucia. Among the topics discussed was how communities along the county’s coastline have united in their efforts to clean-up in the aftermath of Storm Christine. Strong winds and high tides may have led to millions of euro of damage in a large number of areas, but groups of people have been rolling up their sleeves in an effort to get life back to normal. They also talked about comments made Mary McAleese in relation to the Church’s stance on homosexuality. During an interview with the Glasgow Herald in Scotland last month the former President said the Catholic Church was in denial over homosexuality and that she dislike’s the church’s views on the issue. Continuing their look back at the main news events of the week, the panel discussed how the niece of fashion designer Ralph Lauren has been fined €2,000 for being drunk and abusive on board a plane diverted to Shannon on Monday. 41 year old Jenny Lauren of East 65th Street in New York pleaded guilty to 2 charges before Ennis District Court – she had first been brought before Judge Durkan at Killaloe District Court sitting at the Brian Boru pub  – apologising for threatening, insulting and pushing over a member of the cabin crew on the Delta Flight from Barcelona to JFK airport. The court heard the total cost of the diversion amounted to 43 thousand dollars but Judge Patrick Durkan accepted Ms Laurens behaviour was due to a mixture of alcohol and medication for her Bipolar and anxiety disorders. With international media covering the case – the panel asked – how does it look to have court sittings in a pub setting? And are we ourselves progressing the national stereotype of the drunken Irish?

Tess Purcell, our resident Stylist joined us for a look at the January sales, what’s left on the rails and what’s the difference between an impulse buy and a real bargain.  She gave us good advice on how to make the right choice when it comes to sale shopping and gave tips on ways to give the illusion we’re slimmer than we are!  She discussed colour blocking and styles of clothes that can help mask part of our bodies we’re conscious of.  She also looked ahead to the Spring and revealed that sequins will remain!

Sorcha NicMhathuna is Oxfam’s Communications Coordinator and joined the show to highlight to people in Clare how they can donate any unwanted Christmas gifts to their local Oxfam shop on Parnell Street in Ennis. Oxfam shops are in critical need of donations and with two-thirds of people receiving unwanted gifts at Christmas, they are trying to encourage people to donate those rather than shove them at the back of their wardrobes! The new year is a good time to simplify and de-clutter while helping people living in extreme poverty around the world. Oxfam accepts donations of books, clothes, shoes, jewellery, home wares or any item of good quality.
