Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan was today joined by Journalist Eugene Phelan from the Limerick Leader on the show to discuss how the hugely successful JP McManus pro-am tournament which has attracted golfing stars like Tiger Woods and Hollywood A-listers like Samuel L Jackson will not be taking place in 2015, according to reports. Tax residency laws limiting JP McManus’s time in Ireland are being cited as reason for the cancellation of next year’s event.

Claire Ni Grianna also spoke to Máire about a new course for people interested in gardening and horticulture in West Clare. A FETAC level 5 Horticulture course called ‘Taking Your Produce From farm to fork’ will start in the Resource Centre in Miltown Malbay on January 20th and runs through to December 2014 for mornings only. The course is primarily aimed at the 18 to 35 age group in receipt of Social Welfare, which they will retain for the duration of the course. Some modules include: Plant Protection, Plant Science, Plant Identification & use. For anyone that is interested please check your eligibility by registering at your local FAS office for this course ref:LKB4W. To register call 065-6866800 or call to the Resource Centre in Milltown Malbay.

Ahead of the Shannonside Winter Music Weekend Máire was joined by Brendan Walsh, the Organiser of the 15th annual weekend in Sixmilebridge and musicians Brendan Walsh Jr, a classical guitarist, Brian King and Vicky Silberstein.  Brendan Junior is steeped in classical music, while his folk background is coming to the fore at this stage with his band “Penguins by Choice” who have just signed a record deal in Switzerland. At the festival this year he will appear in many guises over the weekend, as a classical guitar soloist in the Castle, as one of Trio Elatha for the classical recital in Sixmilebridge Church and in many of the pub venues with the Flautist Amin Mokdad and percussionist Greg Clifford who will back the guys – drawing on folk, gypsy, classical, jazz and pop musical genres. Brian King is a Singer and  Musician from Dublin. Brian spent his teenage years in Limerick, where he began playing the songs of Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, The Dubliners, Ralph McTell and the likes.  His sets today still reflect that genre of music and are sprinkled with his own compositions.  He played at the inaugural Sixmilebridge Folk Club session and since then, has been a regular at the Winter Music Weekend. Brian and Brendan are joining forces for the opening concert of the festival tonight.

Rory Cashin from Entertainment.ie also joined the show to talk about the newly announced nominations for the 86th Academy Awards, which will be held in March. He talked about how Leonardo DiCaprio’s hoping his success at the Golden Globes could help him to finally win a golden Oscars statue. He’s among the nominees for ‘Best Actor’ for his role in The Wolf of Wall Street. The nominations were announced this lunchtime and include British star Chiwetel Ejiofor in the same category. Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett are also getting a nod for ‘Best Actress.’  Gravity, Captain Phillips, American Hustle and 12 Years A Slave are in the running for best film.

Paul “Calso” Callaghan – our resident Cook, Food Blogger and Author of Calso Cooks: Real Food Made Easy was in studio to talk about his new book and give us a tasty recipe to beat the winter blues.  The new book is a no-nonsense guide to producing delicious, nutritious meals. Paul is sharing his brand of hearty, rustic cooking and his enthusiasm for the mental and physical benefits of real food with the wider community through the book and of course his blog – thesustainablelarder.blogspot.com – you’ll find his recipe for pearl barley, pea and leak risotto both on his blog and in his book.
