On today’s show Máire was joined by the Friday Panel. Joining her in studio was Paul Madden, Manager of Templegate Hotel, Ennis, Dr. Geraldine Mooney Simmie, a Lecturer in Education at UL and a Lisdoonvarna native, Clare FM’s Brian Flynn and Ennis Playwright and Director, Laura Mulcahy. They talked about the week that was in Clare and Ireland and discussed in particular “Neknomination”. It’s a new social media craze that reached Irish shores, in which people are encouraged to film themselves chugging back alcoholic drinks. The practice promotes harmful binge drinking. The drinking trend – known as involves the “neknominator” who, after posting a video of themselves online downing a pint, then “neknominates” one or two of their friends to follow suit. The rules dictate that they now have 24 hours to upload their video and nominate their choices, carrying on the trend.

The panellists also asked if slapping children is acceptable in today’s society? Child welfare groups have called for slapping to be outlawed after a new survey has found that two in five parents have admitted to hitting their child. Carried out by the ISPCC and the Children’s Rights Alliance, the survey has also found that ; of the two in five adults who admitted to hitting their children, just 1% said they did it often. They also found that almost 75% of parents think slapping is an ineffective disciplinary tool, while the most popular method is incentives for good behaviour with four in five parents using this. Grounding was the least popular with less than half of parents using this method

And the panel would not have been complete this week without a word on Garth Brooks. GarthMania is continuing as yesterday, tickets for the fourth and fifth Garth Brooks concerts in Dublin’s Croke Park sold out. 400,000 tickets have been sold, the equivalent to 8.7% of the population. He will be the first artist to play five consecutive nights in Croke Park, while Aiken Promotions have said the concerts are the fastest selling shows they have been involved in in more than 50 years.
