Minister insists Clare will continue to have a rural transport network

The government says it will make a decision on the future of Clare Accessible Transport later this year.

Junior Transport Minister Alan Kelly has insisted that there are no plans to abolish the rural transport program, but he says changes have to be made to improve levels of service on a national basis.

Concern has been raised for the future of 35 community-based groups like CAT, since the leaking of a draft document which proposed that they be abolished and replaced with 8 regional authorities run by county councils.

Speaking during a Dáil debate last night, Minister Kelly insisted that is just a proposal, and that he will work with stakeholders before announcing a final decision.
