A Shannon man has been jailed for three months after he stole a a €400 medical wig off the head of his ex-lover.

At Ennis District Court, Judge Patrick Durcan jailed 41-year-old Paul Carr of Cluain Airne, Shannon after describing as ‘appalling’ his act of removing the wig from the head of his ex-girlfriend and making off with it during a dispute.

Mr Carr and his ex-partner had split up as a couple in 2012 and his solicitor Tara Godfrey said her client had found it very difficult to come to terms with the break-up.

In the case, the 38-year-old woman purchased the wig as she was recovering from a serious illness.

On January 17th of this year, a dispute arose between the pair and Gardaí say it was during this that Paul Carr removed the wig from her head, and then refused to give it back.

Inspector Tom Kennedy also outlined how the woman had bought the wig to boost her confidence as she was going through treatment, that it allowed her to go to work and that it wasn't a trivial matter.

On behalf of her absent client, Ms Godfrey said Paul Carr had developed a problem with alcohol, and that the breakup of the relationship was a difficult time.

She added that he apologises unreservedly to his ex-girlfriend.

Judge Durcan said he has great sympathy with Carr, but described his actions as "appalling" and jailed him for three months.
