The Government is being called on to transfer more powers to local housing groups so that those awaiting social housing receive acceptable homes.

Clare County Council’s Social Development Committee has heard that inspections of homes on the Housing Assistance Payment scheme are often not carried out until the tenant has moved in.

It means houses which are not fit for purpose can be lived in for several months before a problem is identified.

Dermot Hayes, who is a member of the committee, says many have become so desperate for a roof over their heads, they move in without checking.
